Dirr's HARDY TREES AND SHRUBS: An Illustrated Encyclopedia by Michael A. Dirr.  Dirr's MANUAL OF WOODY LANDSCAPE PLANTS (below) has been the standard reference for students of horticulture for over 15 years, and in 1997 this stunning photographic companion was published.  Many refer to this as "the photographic edition of the MANUAL" but it is a very different book.  HARDY TREES is a selection guide with exceptional photographs of each plant in fruit, in flower, fall colour if noteworthy, in profile, etc.  and the information given on each discusses this expert's opinion on garden worthiness, or lack thereof, and basic descriptive information.  Invaluable lists group plants by site preference or ornamental features - ie: good for shade; good for clay; for fall colour; by size; bloom time; etc.  An essential tool to guide plant selection, while the MANUAL is the book for details about cultivation and propagation, with only line drawings of identifying features and with a far greater list of cultivars.  Together they comprise virtually all there is to know about cultivated woody plants today.  HARDY TREES is a must have for all garden professionals - by far the best book to guide woody plant selection, and MANUAL is the book for growers and collectors looking for a comprehensive reference. 494pgs / 8 1/2 x 11 / full colour throughout / $95.95hc
